1977 Alaskan of the Year – Painter Fred Machetanz

Machetanz, a celebrated artist originating from Alaska, dedicated his craft to capturing the essence of Alaskan landscapes, inhabitants, and wildlife. His artistic journey commenced in 1935 with a visit to Unalakleet, where his uncle managed a trading post.

Over two years, Machetanz meticulously curated a series of Alaskan scenes. Despite a stint as an illustrator in New York, his heart yearned for Alaska. In 1942, he seized the chance to return, volunteering with the U.S. Navy and serving in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. Post-war, he briefly refined his skills at the Art Students League in New York, specializing in lithography under Will Barnet’s guidance, before returning to Unalakleet in 1946.

Fred and Sara MachetanzIn 1947, Machetanz exchanged vows with Sara Dunn, a writer, and they established their residence near Palmer, Alaska, by 1951. Their collaboration extended beyond personal life, encompassing various literary and cinematic projects for Walt Disney, the Territory of Alaska, and Encyclopedia Britannica. Moreover, they embarked on promotional and lecture tours across the contiguous United States from 1948 to 1960.

A pivotal moment in Machetanz’s career materialized on April 21, 1962, when Bob Atwood, editor and publisher of the Anchorage Times, curated a solo exhibition of his artworks, yielding remarkable success and propelling Machetanz into a full-time dedication to painting.

Recognition for his contributions abounded. In 1977, he received the distinction of Alaskan of the Year, and in 1981, American Artist magazine bestowed upon him the prestigious title of American Artist of the Year. Additionally, Machetanz was conferred honorary doctorates from both the University of Alaska and The Ohio State University.

The Machetanz legacy transcended the confines of art. Their philanthropic pursuits led to the naming of several facilities in their honor, including the football field at Palmer High School, a building at Mat-Su College, and a theater in Wasilla.
